When bullets flew past my two-year-old son last fall in New York, I didn't think about anything but throwing my body around him. I was four months pregnant. The shooting happened before dusk on a Brownstone-lined block on a lovely Meg Ryan New York Autumn Day. I was sitting on the stoop of our Clinton Hill rental with two of our friends. My son was on the sidewalk amusing us by (incorrectly) counting the cars on his magnetic train set while my husband hovered over him.
Wow. I’m so sorry you experienced that (were you ever able to sleep again?), and even sorrier for Jaden’s family. Psychotic is the best word I’ve heard to describe our country’s gun laws.
This is heartbreaking; I'm so sorry this happened to your family (writing to you from Melbourne, Australia where the frequency of these incidents, and subsequent inaction, continues to horrify me)
Gun violence is something I frequently talk about. People forget it’s not just the person who was shot at and/or killed. Gun violence affects families, friends, neighbors, communities. I truly do not understand how so many justify this. Do I want young people or, anyone actually, with zero training or experience carrying around guns casually. Do I want 18 year olds buying multiple rifles and hundreds of rounds? Hell no.
I can’t imagine being a child in a school shooting and then having to enter that building again. Sandy Hook and Brady United have chilling commercials showing young people with gun wounds discussing horrifying tales of playing dead and even covering themselves in blood, and watching their friends die in front of them. Guns change, so should laws!!!

Ugh, I hate all of this, and I’m so sorry that happened to you.
For me, that sound, it never goes away. My hearing has worsened with age, and illness. That helps.
