Some thoughts and questions I had while watching the Broadway musical "Suffs."
An incomplete list.
Oh no. Here we go. Not really a “musical person” why did I think this would be different.
Is this going to be girl Hamilton? White Girl Hamilton? The snarky Times headline even used a Hamilton lyric in it.
Ok. They’re addressing it. They’re addressing the racism in the suffrage movement. Congratulations, now they can get back to -
Oh they’re not moving on.
Is Ida B. Wells the main character of this show?
Is this a play about the racism and problematic internal politics of the suffrage movement?
Yes.
It’s actually kind of nice that they’re not rapping.
Holy shit, Jenn Colella.
The best song I have heard in a musical is “This Girl”
Wow, Jenn Colella.
Am I…no. Don’t be ridiculous. You had all of college to figure that out and you have a husband now! A beautiful family.
I am a straight woman who will have a beautiful family with Jenn Colella.
Is this song about a woman alienating her entire life to work for what she believes in, indeed, making me cry?
Shaina Taub as Alice Paul as Jamie Lee/All of Us.
Shaina Taub has made me cry in public.
Did I go to camp with Shaina?
Nope. Different person. That was internalized antisemitism. Sorry.
Crying again. Oh no. Oh G-d. I am outright crying unstoppable tears in public at a song sung by a NJG I either did or did not go to camp with.
Wait - sorry. The stage is on fire.
The stage is on fire and everyone is dancing and screaming.
This is a coven.
Suffs is a shockingly intersectional coven and I am in the coven.
I am taking my niece to this.
May everyone thinking of not voting in this election see this.
May every man see this.
We are going right back to before this.
If this happens again, I will march and hold my ground with my friends and people I admire.
I am irrationally angry that I was not taught this story in school, and my kid might not be taught this story in school.
I will teach my sons this story.
If Nikki M. James doesn’t win the Tony, then awards, I will be the first to say, are meaningless.
My sons would pronounce this musical “Thufths.”
I am a musical person.
As a co-producer of SUFFS I am thrilled you love it! I cry every time I see it. Let’s go again together!
Thanks to this, I am now a proud owner of a "put the rage in suffrage" tote.
