Hi!
You may have noticed that almost all of my political writing is just for subscribers who pay the $5 a month to get this newsletter.
I am also not sharing any slideshow- screenshotted Substacks about president on instagram.
The reason for that is safety.
There are, in fact, lists. The president has vowed to come after critics and he has started doing it in public, beginning with the White House press pool.
Because he blocked me on Twitter during his first term, and the Knight Foundation at Columbia University successfully sued him requiring him to personally unblock my Twitter account by name, the lawyers I most trust have told me to be careful.
One thing I won’t do is stop going after Donald Trump. One thing I will do is protect my writing so it can’t be casually forwarded, reposted or accessed by anyone who isn’t literally bought in.
It’s the safety mechanism that makes me feel able to keep doing this without frantically googling “Canada citizenship how” at 2am.
Solidarity and thank you.
As always, if you have been laid off or are a student, please message me and I can help get a gift subscription for you.
Love,
Bess
