Discouraging news!
On "being politicall"
There are plenty of people who subscribe to this newsletter because they enjoy my children’s book series, “Buffalo Fluffalo.”
Some are here from relatable “mom!” content I’ve posted in screenshots to Instagram.
Many are here for Judaism.
But most of you know that The Grudge Report is primarily a political comedy newsletter.
And even though there is the occasional Heated Rivalry fan fiction, I often use this platform and our correspondence (which is a wonderful thing about having a newsletter, I am writing directly to you) to process political tumult.
And yet, every time I take an explicitly hard-line progressive stance, I lose paid subscribers. It seems the people who pay for this and sustain it and allow me to keep dedicating time to this project are far more centrist and in some cases right-leaning on certain issues (!) than the thousands of people who read this for free.
Here’s what happened this week after I posted two newsletters critical of the Trump administration.
It is discouraging, but not altogether surprising, as it’s exactly what happened after each piece I wrote endorsing Mamdani for mayor, which, as of this writing, has not yet resulted in full scale Sharia law being enacted in New York City!
So here I am, seeing if taking the exact opposite ideological approach to Bari Weiss might also be somewhat rewarded by a readership. I certainly love writing for you, and am grateful you listen to me at all.
Thank you for stepping up while others have bowed out.
And as always, if you are a student or unemployed, please message me and I’ll comp your paid subscription.
