“Is Bess interested in writing about anything else?” asked one very, very, Very respected editor.
Of course she is. Of course I am.
I’m interested in writing about anything else. I’m interested in thinking about anything else. About washing anything else off my body and my hair and my nipples every morning.
I’m interested in — I paused for half a minute to think of the word — multitudes. I contain them. And I was born containing the eggs that transmogrified into the children whom I mother at the expense of everything else. At the expense of sleep and sanity and thought and remembering Whitman and any of the great men who wrote about everything else while some woman in the other room mothered their children.
I am larger than I once was. And so much smaller. Entering motherhood, I lost so much blood I needed two emergency surgeries and several transfusions. And I contain much more now that the eggs became the children that are out in the world - two gentle boys mercifully oblivious to anything but the gentle world I’ve given to them.
And next year, thanks to an editor who said, “I am interested in hearing what Bess has to write about this,” you’ll read about all of it. Also: It’s funny! Because isn’t it always?
And as subscribers to this newsletter, you’ll be the first to hear about it.
